Hybrid Power Generation

Instead of hydrogen generation, how easy would it be for you to make an electrical generator for hybrids so that it aids the batteries or the engine? Don't know in terms of efficiency, but it would seem like something to try, since that could boost MPGs far more than 10% on a hybrid. I am currently getting about 50mpg in an Insight and I think if you could boost that to 70mpg average, that would be a great advantage.
